Response to parliamentary committees
In 2024-25, the following Parliamentary Committee report required a response:
Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Foresty (AGFO) Committee Report #13: Critical Ground: Why Soil Is Essential to Canada's Economic, Environmental, Human, and Social Health (PDF)
- The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry requested a response from the Government of Canada on this report.
- CanNor provided input to the Government Response (PDF), which was tabled on November 5th, 2024.
- CanNor provided input into the Government of Canada's response to Recommendation 6, "The Committee recommends that the Government create a national permafrost assessment program."
- CanNor's input referenced funding the Agency provided to research on Arctic permafrost conditions and geoscience research. It also referenced regulatory process for major resource development and infrastructure projects in the Territories.
In addition, CanNor participated in the development of several other Parliamentary Committee reports in 2024-25. However, none of these reports required a formal response from the Agency or included recommendations for CanNor to address. The reports CanNor contributed to include the following:
House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade
- In early 2024, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade (committee) undertook a study on the challenges and measures impacting Canada's supply chains and international trade. CanNor officials participated in this study.
- The Committee Report 23 – Canada's Supply Chain and Expanded International Trade: Challenges and Measures was tabled in Parliament on December 16, 2024.
- There were no specific recommendations for CanNor to address.
- Due to the timing of the dissolution of 44th Parliament and subsequent federal election, a corresponding Government Response was not tabled within the 2024-25 fiscal year.
House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs
- In early 2022, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs (committee) undertook a study on the barriers to economic development in Indigenous communities. CanNor officials participated in this study.
- The Committee Report 2 – Barriers to Economic Development in Indigenous Communities was tabled in Parliament on September 15, 2022.
- There were no specific recommendations for CanNor to address.
- The Government Response to Report 2 was tabled in Parliament on April 11, 2024.
- The Government Response highlighted CanNor's programs and procedures as examples of the Agency's current adherence to 8 of the 26 recommendations in the committee report; specifically, recommendations 4, 5, 7, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25.
House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources
- In late 2022, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources (committee) undertook a study on federal assistance to Canada's natural resources sectors. CanNor officials participated in this study.
- The Committee Report 11 – Federal Assistance to Canada's Natural Resources Sectors was tabled in Parliament on October 24, 2024.
- There were no specific recommendations for CanNor to address.
- Due to the timing of the dissolution of 44th Parliament and subsequent federal election, a corresponding Government Response was not tabled within the 2024-25 fiscal year.
House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages
- In early 2024, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages (committee) undertook a study on the challenges of economic development in official language minority communities. CanNor officials participated in this study.
- The Committee Report 6 – Economic Development of Official Language Minority Communities was tabled in Parliament on October 24, 2024.
- There were no specific recommendations for CanNor to address.
- Due to the timing of the dissolution of 44th Parliament and subsequent federal election, a corresponding Government Response was not tabled within the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans
- In late 2022, the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans (committee) undertook a study on the sealing industry in Canada. CanNor officials participated in this study.
- The Committee Report 8 – Sealing the Future: A Call to Action (PDF) was tabled in the Senate on May 23, 2024.
- There were no specific recommendations for CanNor to address.
