UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture

2022‒23 Planned initiatives

  • From CanNor 22–23 DP: Zero Hunger (SDG 2), more specifically target 2.4 (ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change).
  • CanNor supports the advancement of SDG 2, and specifically target 2.4, by leveraging the Northern Isolated Community Initiatives (NICI) fund to deliver funding to impactful food production system projects across Canada's northern territories.

Associated domestic targets or "ambitions" and/or global targets

  • Supported projects promote resilient agricultural practices and increase the capacity for northern food production in communities affected by food insecurity and climate change.

2022‒23 Results

  • In alignment with CanNor's Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (anticipated release: fall of 2023), reporting on SDG targets will begin following data collection in 2023–2024.

SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

2022–23 Planned initiatives

  • CanNor 22–23 DP notes: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (SDG 8), more specifically target 8.3 (promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services).
  • CanNor supports the advancement of SDG 8, and specifically target 8.3, by leveraging the IDEANorth program to deliver funding to impactful and inclusive skills-based capacity development projects across Canada's northern territories. Pilimmaksaivik is committed to increasing services and training outlined in the federal Inuit Employment Plan (IEP).

  • Supported projects promote job creation, entrepreneurship and innovation and increase the productivity and sustainability of northern SMEs. Pilimmaksaivik continues to increase services and training outlined in the federal Inuit Employment Plan (IEP)

2022‒23 Results

  • In alignment with CanNor's Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy expected to be released in the fall of 2023, reporting on SDG targets will begin following data collection in 2023–2024.
  • Pilimmaksaivik results:
  • Pilimmaksaivik is now a standing agenda item at the Deputy Minister Oversight Committee (DMOC) and the Pilimmaksaivik ADM Steering Committee is required to report to DMOC on Article 23 whole-of-government Inuit employment activities, programming, and progress. Pilimmaksaivik's visibility at DMOC will increase departmental accountability and awareness of treaty obligations with the goal to break the litigation cycle.
  • Nine successful appointments through the Inuksugait Resume Inventory in 2022–2023.
  • More uptake and utilization, as well as awareness of the Ilipallianniq Education Support Fund, Inuktut Language Training Fund available to GoC Nunavut Inuit employees.
  • Twelve Nunavut Inuit GoC employees are now certified in Project Management.
  • The Nunavut Arctic College Practicum collaboration was the most successful to date with five successful placements and three full-time employees for the Government of Employment concluding practicums.
  • The Nunavut Summer Student Initiative led to two successful summer student hires.
  • Approximately 60 new Inuksugait Resume Inventory applications were collected from the communities of Arviat and Kugluktuk.
  • Pilimmaksaivik collected 10 resumes and applications for the Inuksugait Resume Inventory and also connected students to hiring managers through presentations on the available Government of Canada positions across all 11 departments and agencies with Article 23 objectives.
  • Pilimmaksaivik, in collaboration with CanNor Corporate Services, processed five new security clearance applications leading to five successful security clearances of these talented individuals ready for Government of Canada employment.

SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

2022–23 Planned initiatives

  • CanNor 22–23 DP: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation (SDG 9), more specifically target 9.1 (develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and trans-border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all).
  • CanNor supports the advancement of SDG 9, and specifically target 9.1, by leveraging the IDEANorth program, as well as the Tourism Relief Fund, to deliver funding to impactful infrastructure projects across Canada's northern territories.
  • The Northern Projects Management Office (NPMO) is committed to improving the efficiency of how federal government departments participate in territorial environmental assessment and regulatory review processes for proposed major resource development and infrastructure projects in the territories.

Associated domestic targets or "ambitions" and/or global targets

  • Supported projects promote inclusive and sustainable economic development through the construction, expansion and renovation of strategic regional infrastructure.
  • NPMO priorities include:
    1. Coordinating federal departmental participation during environmental assessment processes for major projects in the territories;
    2. Convening and providing issues management support to Indigenous organizations, industry proponents and other stakeholders during environmental assessment and regulatory review processes, and
    3. Maintaining the Crown consultation record for major projects in the territories.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

2022–23 Planned initiatives

  • CanNor 22–23 DP: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns (SDG 12), more specifically 12.6 (encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle).
  • CanNor supports the advancement of SDG 12, and specifically target 12.6, by leveraging the IDEANorth program, as well as the Jobs & Growth Fund, to deliver funding to impactful production, innovation and expansion projects across Canada's northern territories.
  • CanNor is also committed to supporting the Greening Government goal and the Policy on Green Procurement.

Associated domestic targets or "ambitions" and/or global targets

  • Supported projects promote sustainable consumption and production patterns by developing local productivity and manufacturing to address key northern sustainability challenges.
  • CanNor will contribute to the whole-of-government approach to transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient, and green operations.

  • In alignment with CanNor's Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy expected to be released in the fall of 2023, reporting on SDG targets will begin following data collection in 2023–2024.
  • In alignment with the Greening Government Strategy, reporting on the departmental green procurement targets for goods and services will begin following data collection in 2023-2024.
