About the Northern Business Relief Fund (NBRF)
In recognition of the continuing impacts of COVID-19 on Tourism and related industries in the territories, CanNor is offering to extend financial support beyond July 31, 2020, to current eligible recipients of the NBRF program. The funding extension is based on demonstrated need and would provide funding up to a maximum of $100,000 or up to March 31, 2021, whichever comes first.
This extended support is intended primarily for businesses operating in Tourism, Accommodations and Food Services, as well as Arts, Entertainment/Recreation, Transportation and Retail sectors. Businesses in other sectors may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
All other requirements outlined in the NBRF Guidelines must still be met to be eligible for the funding extension. Current NBRF recipients in these sectors are encouraged to contact their CanNor Regional Office to discuss funding extension options.
The Northern Business Relief Fund (NBRF) provides short term support, in the form of a non-repayable grant, for ongoing operational costs to small- and medium-sized territorial businesses impacted by economic disruptions due to COVID-19.
The NBRF complements the suite of relief measures implemented by the Government of Canada to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Canadian economy.
The Fund provides eligible territorial SMEs with short-term relief for operational costs in the form of a non-repayable grant ranging from $2,500 to a maximum of $100,000. The funding covers a maximum period of 4 months, retroactive to April 1, 2020.
The NBRF is delivered directly through the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
REMINDER: No new direct applications to CanNor for NBRF will be accepted after July 31st, 2020. For any questions related to your active agreement, pending application or extension request, or to discuss alternative sources of financing, please don’t hesitate to contact your CanNor Regional Office.

Who should apply?
The NBRF supports small and medium-sized territorial businesses operating in one or more of the territories, and which are currently, and expect to continue, operating at a loss as a direct result of economic disruptions associated with COVID-19. Note: Businesses with fewer than 20 employees will be prioritized.

Important Notice for Yukon businesses
Yukon businesses are asked to apply to the Yukon Government's Yukon Business Relief Program and indicate on your application that you consent to having your information shared with the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. The Yukon Government's Department of Economic Development and CanNor will be coordinating relief for Yukon businesses. Once your application has been submitted to the Yukon Government, you will be considered as an applicant for both relief programs. You do not need to submit an application for both programs.
Please apply and submit directly to CanNor's Northern Business Relief Fund if you are ineligible for the Yukon Business Relief Program due to the following reasons:
- your revenue loss is less than 30%;
- you are listed in an ineligible sector under the Yukon Business Relief Program but meet all the eligibility requirements of CanNor's Northern Business Relief Fund; or
- you do not consent to having your information shared.
